Yearning — Ja’afar Umar Farouque

Happy is yet our dream
A dream of hope and positive results
The earth and the sun could be ours
Had we but world enough, and time
The spirit, the optimism and the wisdom
We would sit down, and make our plans
And mould our strength and all
Our affection up into one ball
And now more often than not
My willing soul yearns
And leave all the questions unanswered.

O! beloved, pleasant are thy looks
Hold your brain and hold your mind
Don’t let it sink or slip
But remain awake — yes! Awake
And tell me with your melting eyes
Your enchanting smiles and your velvety voice
That your smiles are all for me
That we love, we care, and we understand,
That we may one day
Fly away from the dirt and the filth of this world
On the wings of a beautiful white dove
Which is as lovable as you
Tell me — whether you love me so
Through the pen and paper
And some ink black.
