A Decade of Poetry, Expression, and Healing

The Open Mic Community Development Initiative represents a decade-long commitment to fostering creative expression and community healing in Nigeria's underserved regions. Through two flagship platforms—Open Mic Ogbomoso (est. 2015) and Open Mic Maiduguri (est. 2020)—this initiative has created safe spaces where poetry becomes a tool for personal development, social connection, and collective transformation.

The vision behind the Open Mic initiative is both simple and profound: every voice matters, and art can heal where words sometimes fail. In cities often overlooked by mainstream cultural programming, these platforms provide consistent, judgment-free spaces where poets, storytellers, and community members can experiment, grow, process trauma, celebrate resilience, and reimagine their futures through creative expression..

Target Audience:

1. Emerging and established poets seeking performance platforms and mentorship.

2. Youth (ages 15-35) interested in creative expression and personal development.

3. Post-conflict community members seeking healing through art.

4. Students and young professionals exploring poetry and spoken word.

5. Community leaders and cultural advocates

6. Trauma survivors looking for safe spaces for expression.

7. Educators and youth workers supporting creative development.

8. General audiences interested in authentic Nigerian storytelling and cultural programming

Open Mic Ogbomoso (Est. 2015).

Launched in Oyo State as a cultural landmark, OMO has become a cornerstone platform for emerging and established poets. Monthly sessions feature open mic performances, thematic showcases, guest poets, and audience engagement activities that turn spectators into participants. Beyond performance, OMO offers mentorship circles, writing workshops, and collaborative projects that strengthen the local creative economy. The platform has nurtured dozens of young poets, many of whom have gone on to win regional and national competitions. OMO has also partnered with schools, youth organizations, and cultural bodies to expand its reach and create a thriving poetry ecosystem.

Open Mic Maiduguri (Est. 2020).

Born in Nigeria's Northeast during a period of post-conflict recovery, OMM serves as a cultural refuge where art becomes healing. Each session is carefully curated to balance performance with psychosocial support, offering participants not just a microphone but also a community that listens, validates, and uplifts. Monthly gatherings feature spoken word poetry, storytelling circles, collaborative mural projects, and skill-building workshops.
The platform has partnered with humanitarian organizations, including UNICEF and Goal Prime, to integrate trauma-informed arts programming into broader peacebuilding and youth empowerment initiatives. OMM has become instrumental in providing psychological relief through creative expression, offering counter-narratives to trauma while fostering community cohesion..

The Model.

Both platforms operate on a community-driven model that ensures sustainability while maintaining artistic integrity. Sessions include open mic slots for newcomers, featured performances by established poets, skill-building segments, collaborative art-making, and post-performance dialogues that extend the conversation beyond the stage. The initiative trains local facilitators, documents stories of transformation, and creates pathways for participants to become community advocates and cultural leaders.

Outcomes:

Over 100 poets mentored across both platforms, 9+ years of consistent programming, sustained creative spaces in post-conflict and underserved communities, hundreds of community members engaged, documented stories of healing and transformation, alumni network of award-winning performers, and proven model for arts-based community development that has inspired similar initiatives across Nigeria.
