Untitled (Thunder rocked and gathered the sky in its arms)
Thunder rocked and gathered the sky in its arms
The rain danced and danced
Till overcome, it fell laughing on our rooftops
And diviners lost their native creed
In a handful of drizzle
I have planted my feet in the square
And though my appetites grow and the music moves me
(Judge me well), I cannot prance to their tune:
I have been watered and found wilting
Only the days know how I feel
How blessing washes off me, my world, wasted
How prayers come and go (traitors
On their way to Heaven), and how, too,
None is left at home but a changeless faith
To wash away the debt and the filth
And hint at endless limits
Ah! There is menace in every relaxing song
In sermons, in sickles, in scimitars
In lightening that lie to the sky:
Angered, I have denounced the belly of the valley;
Asaase Yaa give the word and I will be touched
These then are my days logged in silence:
A long wait, a drizzle of possibilities
A greening, sun-song in the rain;
The sky gave birth to thunder, who also made rain: Where but home is the navel of the dissolving proverb?
