The Nigerian pledge
"I pledge to Nigeria my country
To be faithful, loyal and honest "
The Nigerian pledge
Did we write this?
Since our glorious inception
These words,
Anchor of our Deception
Renewed every morning
Truthful lies so stunning
I recall my zealous recital in school
More or less I must have been a fool
For even then, thieves, cabals beside me solemnly swore
"To be faithful, loyal and honest!"
Oh Yes!we are honest
We trample on the poor
Oh!we are faithful
In killing eachother
Our leaders,
To our cries ever deaf
Leaving in our hearts a hollow cleft
We see it ourselves
They" love their money as themselves "
Was this our pledge?
"To be unfaithful, disloyal and dishonest"?
I seek not a new anthem
Not a new pledge
But new hearts
Uttering words of truth
The cries of our fallen
Did our leaders create this?
In a naturally blessed society
With people of outspoken piety
We yet destroy ourselves with little remorse
My unspoken question
My hidden dilemma
If I journey to these bridges of choice,
Compared to my predecessors
Would I do worse?
