WHAT IFs
WHAT IFs
By: Okechukwu Elosiuba Rhema
Answers am striving to hatch:
What if…
What if we had the power,
To make the earth swirl in reverse,
Dance back to the ages afore,
Make the sun awake on the west,
And recline to the east;
Would our air be purged?
Of these venoms that we inhale:
The spits of metal beasts to the heavens,
That men may breathe and live again.
What if…
What if we could make the rivers flow backwards?
To return to whence she was born,
Would she refund the many she stole?
Souls that now slumber in watery graves.
Would she be clean to drink again?
Be gravid with fishes and flourish once more
What if…
What if we could call back the trees from exile?
Would the sycamore agree to home the lark and the finch?
Spread her green shawls,
To shield the forest floors,
From the punches of the tyrant Sun
Would there be roses in the Sahara?
Would there be fountains in the Kalahari?
What if…
What if we could make the grave barf?
Void her belly of the many she has eaten,
Fed by the kleptomaniac fingers of death;
Would the tears,
That lick the crevices of our heavy faces,
Trek back into our sullen eyes?
What if…
What if we could travel back in time,
To when our world still had some sense?
When beauty was best appreciated clothed,
Our nakedness commanding priceless worth,
Would our ancestors,
Now cease turning in their graves?
